Top 3 Botox Myths Debunked

By: Meredith Baker, CPNP-AC, FNP-C

Many people are intimidated by the idea of injectables, specifically Botox. We're lucky enough to have Meredith Baker, CPNP-AC, FNP-C, founder and owner of Skinlogic to help us debunk the Top Three Botox Myths

Myth 1: You will look frozen

If that is your jam, bring it on, but there are also people who get Botox to not look so tired - Hello parents!!! You can look natural, just more you. You know, the you before 2020 hit. Also, starting sooner rather than later helps to prevent the DEEP lines.

Myth 2: I am injecting poison into my face!!

Yes, Botox is technically botulinum toxin Type A, which is produced by Bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It works by blocking the transmission of alpha motor neurons at the neuromuscular junction which are responsible for muscle movement. Let's talk amount. Yes, we hear about botulism causing paralysis and not giving your infant honey because it can live in the soil. The average person needs about 50 units to treat the forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet. It takes about 13,300 units of Botox, given all at one time, to have any sort of toxicity.

Myth 3: Only wealthy and vain people get Botox. Yes, it is expensive, but the confidence you feel is worth giving something else up. In terms of vanity, again, maybe you just want to look more awake and refreshed after getting two hours of sleep since your kid was throwing up all night and your dog tracked the vomit into your bedroom all while your partner was sawing logs. And chances are, those people that you envy for "looking so put together and unfazed by well, everyday life", DEFINITELY get Botox.
