Memorial Day Events in Anne Arundel County

By Katy Agro Myers

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor those lost while serving our country. Memorial day is often represented by the wearing/purchasing of red poppy flowers. This tradition is drawn from the poem, In Flanders Fields, written in 1915.

**Publisher's note - back in the 90s, I competed in the VFW Buddy Poppy pageant and was in fact the Buddy Poppy Queen for VFW 160 and still to this day can recite In Flanders Fields.

Today, Memorial Day is celebrated with friends and family. It's a chance to catch up on quality time and take a break from our busy schedules, but also - a time to stop and remember those that have been lost.
